5/9/2023 0 Comments The ordinary princess![]() ![]() A perfect day and a perfect place to write a fairy story. the day was warm and windless and without a cloud in the sky. ![]() ![]() She was no bigger than one of her sisters’ dolls, but she was as pink and white andgold as the apple blossoms and the spring sunshine, and her eyes were as blue as the sky above the Forest of Faraway. They would all have been of chasing after some lissome Royal Highness with large blue eyes and yards of golden hair and probably nothing whatever between her ears! It was in that moment that a story about a princess who turned out to be ordinary jumped into my mind, and the very next morning I took my pencil box and a large rough-notebook down to the orchard and, having settled myself under an apple tree in full bloom, began to write. The seventh princess really was the loveliest baby imaginable. ![]() This struck me as most unfair, and suddenly I began to wonder just how many handsome young princes would have asked a king for the hand of his daughter if that daughter had happened to be gawky, snub-nosed, and freckled, with shortish mouse-colored hair? None, I suspected. All the princesses, apart from such rare exceptions as Snow White, were blond, blue-eyed, and beautiful, with lovely figures and complexions and extravagantly long hair. I had read at least twenty of the when I noticed something that had never struck me before-I suppose because I had always taken it for granted. “This story was written many moons ago under an apple tree in an orchard in Kent, which is one of England's prettiest counties. ![]()

And if you do write about your family and friends, you have to be very careful to disguise them or they will not stay your friends and family very long. Now we all break this rule sometimes and write about one aspect of a person we know, but people are so multifaceted (a bit like mirror balls) that if you just pick one facet of a person’s personality, they’ll never recognise themselves. ![]() For example, a lot of the bossy mothers in the books are me – you wouldn’t want to be my daughter! But Jan Mark very wisely said, “You don’t write about people you know, you write what you know about people”. So have you ever incorporated experiences from your own life into your work?Īll the time! But I do it in a way that is thoroughly disguised. ![]() ![]() I first read Brennan’s “Slime” in the Les Daniels’ Living in Fear: A History of Horror in the Mass Media. These are out and out horror stories rather than examinations of cosmicism. He did write a few Lovecraftian stories in the Cthulhu Mythos. He liked liches/reanimated corpses out for vengeance. ![]() Brennan’s stories are on the gruesome side. The writing is straight forward, the atmosphere is built with everyday language. Most of his stories probably don’t go much past 5,000 words. He produced a small press magazine, Macabre from 1957 to 1976 for a total of twenty-two issues. A tale of a protoplasmic horror from the ocean depths with an insatiable hunger is a chiller.
